Mount Elgon National Park

Mt. Elgon is an extinct volcano on Uganda’s eastern border with Kenya, famous for the world’s largest intact caldera, scenic hiking routes, rare highland birds, caves, coffee trails, and the iconic Sipi Falls nearby.

Overview

Mt. Elgon erupted about 20 million years ago and hosts the largest intact caldera in the world (~40km²). It was once Africa’s highest mountain, but erosion reduced it to 4,321m, making it the 4th highest in East Africa.

Mt Elgon National Park covers about 1,145km² and forms part of a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve. Key peaks include Wagagai (4,321m), Sudek (4,303m), Koitobos (4,222m) and Mubiyi (4,210m).

Wildlife

Wildlife is mostly seen on the lower slopes and forest edges. Birding is the biggest highlight for many visitors.

Animals

The forest setting makes sightings less frequent, but species include defassa waterbuck, elephants, oribi, bushbucks, buffaloes, spotted hyena, and primates like black-and-white colobus monkeys.

Birds

The park hosts ~296 bird species and has Elgon-restricted species. Look out for black-collared apalis, Jackson’s francolin, lammergeyer, black-shouldered kite and Tacazze sunbird.

Mountain hiking (Sasa • Sipi • Piswa)

Mt Elgon is generally a less strenuous climb than other East African mountains but still delivers dramatic views. Trails range from day walks to multi-day hikes.

Bird watching

Birding in Mt Elgon delivers species you won’t easily find elsewhere in Uganda. A popular route is Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre to Chebonet River.

Waterfalls (Sipi Falls)

The mountain rivers plunge over massive cliffs, forming some of Uganda’s most beautiful waterfalls. Hiking all three Sipi Falls is a must-do.
