Quick Links

Overview

Rwenzori Mountains National Park has the highest mountain ranges in Africa. Its highest point lies at 5109m above sea level on Mt Stanley’s Margherita Peak which is the third highest in Africa. It lies astride the equator with six peaks and three of these i.e. Mt Stanley, Mt Baker and Mt Speke are permanently covered with snow. The park covers an area of 996 km².

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 and listed among the best hikes in the world, the Rwenzori lies in western Uganda, about 6 hours’ drive from Kampala. Locally known as Ruwenzori (“rain maker” / “cloud-king”), it is not volcanic but a block of rock faulted through the western Rift Valley.

Mountain Hiking

A trip into the Rwenzoris is exhilarating and rewarding, but preparation is essential. Conditions can challenge even experienced hikers. The central circuit takes about 7 days and reaches 4,267m. Nights are spent in well-maintained huts with porters available.

  • Carry: sleeping bag, warm layers, raincoat, waterproof over trousers.
  • Pack: plastic bags for wet clothing, plus snacks and water.
  • Altitude sickness can affect anyone above 2,500m — best treatment is descent.

Bird Watching

One of Uganda’s best birding areas—especially in the montane forest. Don’t miss the Rwenzori Turaco, Long-eared Owl, bearded vultures and swifts.

Cultural Encounters

Engage with the Bakonzo people on the foothills: gardening, animal husbandry, meal preparation, blacksmith visits, basket weaving, dance and storytelling.

Accessing the Park
